Review – The Emoji Movie

Look, guys, it’s The Emoji Movie.  It is a movie that is based on a keyboard on our cell phones.  What were we honestly expecting from this?  Would you be excited for The Home Row Movie?  I am all about going into a movie with an open mind and not judging the movie until I see the final product, but when the movie is based on a keyboard, it’s kind of tough.  However, the final product isn’t a travesty to cinema.  In fact, I wouldn’t actually call The Emoji Movie a bad movie.  Much like it’s main character, it’s just meh.

The movie revolves around Gene (T.J. Miller), why he has an actual name and nobody else does I do not know, an emoji who would rather express other emotions than the one he is assigned, which is ‘meh’.  He lives in the world of Textapolis, which is inside the phone of high schooler Alex (Jake T. Johnson) and every emoji has one personality.  When Gene messes up his opportunity to be used on Alex’s phone and expresses a different emotion, he puts all of Textapolis in jeopardy and goes on a journey to become a normal emoji with the help of the Hi-5 (James Corden) and a hacker emoji, Hi-5 (Anna Farris).

Why I explained the plot to you, I do not know, it’s irrelevant.  This movie is for anyone under the age of eight and I don’t know many eight year olds who care about plot.  The youngins will enjoy the bright colors, the pop songs, and all the weird things that talk, like hands, Christmas trees, and poop.  As an adult, most of this stuff falls flat.  I will say, I did laugh more than I expected I would.  The poop puns are terrific and James Corden’s energy and ridiculousness as Hi-5 just slaps a smile on your face.

This is a short review because there isn’t much to say.  Take your kids to see this one.  You’ll be unimpressed for an hour and a half but will possibly get a couple of chuckles here and there.  I actually hope they come out with a sequel called The Emoji Movie: Senior Year, where Alex discovers a new use for two of the less popular emojis, the peach and the eggplant.
