Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming Out in August

The final month of summer movie season 2017 is upon us and it is going out with a bang.  Two of my five favorite movies of 2017 come out this month, as well as the return of one of the great directors of our time.  Here are my picks for the best movies coming out in August.

5 – ANNABELLE: CREATION (David F. Sandberg, August 11)

I hated, HATED the first Annabelle (2014).  It was stupid, not scary, and seemed like a cash grab after the success of The Conjuring (2013).  I was also not a fan of Sandberg’s directorial debut Lights Out (2016).  I liked the idea, but again, it was not scary.  Two negatives equal a positive, right?  I had the pleasure of seeing Annabelle: Creation and it rocks.  It is a smart, tense, genuinely scary film that has you jumping at every turn.  I’ll have my full review up next week, but this is one of the best horror movies of 2017.

4 – THE HITMAN’S BODYGUARD (Patrick Hughes, August 18)

What more do you need to know about this movie other than it stars Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson?  Those two could literally paint a fence for two hours and I would still be excited.  The advertising of this movie is great, mocking whole Bodyguard (1992) idea and showing a wonderful bromance between the two stars.  This movie looks absolutely hilarious and the action is sure to be exciting.  This could be the smart, foul comedy we’ve been waiting for all year.

3 – LOGAN LUCKY (Steven Soderbergh, August 18)

Steven Soderbergh took a hiatus from directing for a little while, but he’s back now and that alone gets me excited.  Soderbergh is a truly gifted director.  He can tackle all genres, from drama, to comedy, to caper, and Logan Lucky looks like a great jumping off point to his next run of masterpieces.  The trailers show a film with a quirky tone, great premise, and amazing cast, featuring the hottest names in cinema today like Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Katherine Waterson, Sebastian Stan, Riley Keough, Seth MacFarlane, Hilary Swank, and introducing some guy named Daniel Craig.  I’m sure Soderbergh still has some tricks up his sleeve and I cannot wait to see his latest creation.

2 – WIND RIVER (Taylor Sheridan, August 4)

Up until a few weeks ago, Wind River was my favorite movie of 2017.  I saw it at the Sundance Film Festival in January and it blew me away.  Writer/director Taylor Sheridan, who made a name for himself writing Sicario (2015) and Hell or High Water (2016), makes his directorial debut here and it is one of the more impressive debuts of this decade.  This is a pulse-pounding snow noir that will have you on the edge of your seat the whole film.  Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen give awards-worthy performances as two lawmen with different styles trying to solve a murder that occurred on a Native American reservation.  You can read my full review from Sundance right here, but Wind River is one of the best movies of 2017.

1- DETROIT (Kathryn Bigelow, August 4)

I am writing this piece only a few hours after I just saw Detroit and I am still in complete awe.  This movie is a masterpiece.  Kathryn Bigelow has created an American horror story about the race riots in Detroit in the 1960’s and made a frightening reflection of what America was and is today.  Bigelow’s direction has never been better, and Mark Boal’s screenplay is phenomenal.  The stellar cast of up and comers and established veterans is one of the best of the year.  I don’t want to get too much into Detroit, as I will be posting my review really soon, but just know that, as of right now, this is my number one movie of 2017 and will be incredibly hard to beat.
