5 – DHEEPAN (Jaques Audiard, 2015)

There were a couple other movies coming to Netflix this month that are great, but I felt this movie deserved some recognition.  I saw Dheepan at last year’s Chicago International Film Festival and it is a movie that shook me for days after.  This is about a Sri Lankan Tamil warrior who flees to France and ends up working as a caretaker outside Paris.  This is a powerful, tough character study about a man’s struggle to leave his past and start a new life.  It is expertly made by Jaques Audiard, with stellar performances all around and a shocking ending.  Winner of the Palme D’Or (Best Film) and the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, do yourself a favor and watch this gem now.

4 – UNFORGIVEN  (Clint Eastwood, 1992)

Unforgiven could be argued as Clint Eastwood’s best effort as a director.  I don’t 100% agree with that, but it is certainly in the top three.  This neo-Western is the best of it’s kind.  It is a dark, gritty, violent film about a retired gunslinger (Eastwood) who reluctantly takes on one last job.  Eastwood gives one of the great performances of his career as the grizzled, tortured gunslinger who’s morals are pushed to the limit during his job.  Gene Hackman deservedly won an Oscar for his performance as the corrupt town Sheriff, and Morgan Freeman is great as always.  This is one of the greatest Westerns of all-time.

3 – FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF (John Hughes, 1988)

My personal favorite John Hughes movie, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is every high school kid’s dream and a beautiful ode to the greatest city on earth, Chicago.  Matthew Broderick is iconic as Ferris, the coolest kid in high school who plays hookie with his best friend, Cameron (Alan Ruck), and his girlfriend, Sloane (Mia Sara).  They tour Chicago, doing everything from going to a Chicago Cubs game, to pretending they are the “Sausage King of Chicago”, all while dealing with issues about graduation, relationships, and parental approval.  This is a quotable, funny, timeless comedy.

2 – TITANIC (James Cameron, 1997)

I mean, it’s mother-effing Titanic!  This movie is a classic.  James Cameron’s audacious, sweeping blockbuster is the definition of epic.  This movie changed cinema forever, from it’s scale, to it’s box office numbers, to launching the careers of Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.  For being 19 years old, the movie holds up every single time I watch it.  Everyone has seen this movie, and you can watch it again whenever you want.

1 – DAZED AND CONFUSED (Richard Linklater, 1993)

Alright, alright, alright.  Dazed and Confused is one of the twenty best movies I have ever seen in my life.  Every time I watch it, I feel like I am reconnecting with old friends.  Director Richard Linklater is a pro at capturing moments in life, and this is his most impressive feat yet, as the film takes place in the 70’s, and yet everything resonates, even today.  This a film filled with rich characters, relatable themes, a killer soundtrack, iconic quotes, and it places you perfectly in the setting.  I absolutely love Linklater as a filmmaker, and this is his crowning achievement.
