Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming Out in March
February has come and gone, and it was surprisingly a great month in cinema. Movies like Deadpool, Hail, Caesar, and The Witch were all great in their own way and were bright spots in what is usually a dead month for movies. But now, it is on the March, which is usually the real start to the cinematic year. I probably should have made this last before this past weekend so I could have put Zootopia on it (check out my review here), but we still have four weeks left in the month and plenty of intriguing movies coming, including one of the biggest releases of the year. So here are five awesome movies to keep a look out for this month.
5- The Brothers Grimsby (Louis Leterrier, March 11)
Sasha Baron Cohen is probably the most under-appreciated comedic talent we have. His comedy is the perfect combination of smart, biting, and outrageous, which is exactly what The Brothers Grimsby looks to be. The trailers have done a good job of not giving much away, which will give the audience plenty to laugh at and be surprised about. It also helps that the director, Louis Leterrier, has directed some pretty good action movies in The Transporter (2002) and the good Hulk movie, The Incredible Hulk (2008).
4- The Program (Stephen Frears, March 18)
I don’t know how big of a theatrical release this movie will have, but it is for sure getting a Video On Demand release, which makes it cheaper and easier for everyone to watch it. The Program follows a journalist (Chris O’Dowd) as he investigates the use of banned substances by the Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong (Ben Foster). Foster has always been a great actor and it’s good to see him get a performance he can really chew on. Stephen Frears is great with flawed characters, like in High Fidelity (2000) and The Queen (2006), and Armstrong is as flawed and compelling of a character you can make a movie about.
3 – 10 Cloverfield Lane (Dan Trachtenberg, March 11)
Much like Cloverfield (2008), 10 Cloverfield Lane’s intrigue comes specifically from the trailer. As I said above, The Brothers Grimsby trailers don’t give much away. The 10 Cloverfield Lane trailers give away much less. We know there are three people (John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher Jr.) who might be a family, in a bomb shelter hiding from something. Could it be a monster like Cloverfield? Could it be aliens? Government? Who knows? I’m excited to see what it is. I have no idea if this is a sequel, a prequel, or just has a convenient name (doubt it), but hopefully the movie lives up to the trailer.
2 – Batman v. Superman (Zack Snyder, March 25)
Batman v. Superman is on everyone’s list of most anticipated movies of the year (I had it at #12 on my personal list). We are finally getting two of the biggest comic book characters together in one movie and they are fighting each other. And, to spoil us, we get Wonder Woman as well, who I am most excited to see. The reason why this is my number two pick is because I am not a big fan of Man of Steel and I am not a fan of director Zack Snyder, who in my mind hasn’t made a really good movie since 300 (2007). Also, this could have Spider-Man 3 (2007) syndrome and have too many characters. I really hope this movie is as awesome as I want it to be, otherwise, the DC Cinematic Universe should be worried.
1- Midnight Special (Jeff Nichols, March 18)
Why is a micro sci-fi movie ahead of the gigantic showdown between two comic icons? Because of the master behind it. Jeff Nichols rocked my world in 2011 with the haunting Take Shelter and then proved what he could do with a bigger budget and bigger stars in the incredibly entertaining and thrilling Mud (2013). Midnight Special looks like old school Spielberg in the same vein as E.T. (1982), with dazzling visuals, a great story, family drama, and a lot of heart. Featuring a great cast of Joel Edgerton, Adam Driver, Kirsten Dunst, and Nichols’ favorites Michael Shannon and Sam Shepard, Midnight Special will prove to everyone why Nichols is one of the best directors working today.
