Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming Out in February
Typically, February is a terrible month for movies. It is the dead zone for movies and usually, all I care about in the dreaded month is the Oscars. However, this February seems a little different, as there are quite a few movies that I am pretty excited to see. Here are five movies you should be excited for this month.
5 – The Witch (Robert Eggers)
I sadly missed this film at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, but it was all the craze that year, and I’m glad A24 is giving it a wide release. The Witch tells the story of a family in 1630’s New England who are torn apart by witchcraft, black magic, and possession. I have heard nothing but raves for this movie and hear that it is well made and scary as hell. Sign me up.
4- Zoolander 2 (Ben Stiller)
The original Zoolander (2001) is one of my all-time favorite comedies of all-time. I was obsessed with it when I first saw it, and still laugh myself to tears today. Now, fifteen years later, we get a sequel that I don’t think a lot of people asked for, but one I am still excited for. Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Will Ferrell are back, along with Penelope Cruz, Kristen Wiig, and a slew of others to assist the male model in what should be one of 2016’s funniest films.
3- Triple 9 (John Hillcoat)
Man, does this movie look intense. John Hillcoat’s corrupt cop drama looks like a tough, brutal, bloody film. What has me most excited about this film is the cast, which is filled with some of the best character actors working in Hollywood today. Woody Harrelson and Casey Affleck play the two straight cops, Anthony Mackie plays one of the corrupt cops, and Kate Winslet gets to play a Russian mob boss, which is a role she will kill. We also get Aaron Paul, Norman Redus, Gal Gadot, Michael Kenneth Williams, and the great Chewitel Ejiofor. I love gangster films and I love this cast. This should be a goodie.
2- Deadpool (Tim Miller)
Deadpool should wake me up from the superhero fatigue that I am currently in. Lately, all superhero movies, save for X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), are the same cookie-cutter, mindless entertainment with nothing new to them. Deadpool looks to change that. The hard ‘R’ rating, the breaking of the fourth wall, and the fact that this movie was made because of a hyped sizzle reel are things we have never seen before. And I know Ryan Reynolds failed us as The Green Lantern back in 2011 (I admittedly enjoy that movie a little bit), but this is the role he was meant to play as the cocky, hilarious anti-hero.
1 – Hail, Caesar (Joel and Ethan Coen)
I mean, what other reason do I need besides the fact that it’s The Coen Brothers? Two of the best directors working today are back in the comedy realm following their underrated masterpiece Inside Llewyn Davis (2013). The cast is filled with Coen favorites like George Clooney, Josh Brolin, Francis McDormand, and Tilda Swinton, and adds great comedic actors like Ralph Fiennes, Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and Scarlett Johansson. I’ve never seen a bad Coen Brother movie, but let’s see if Hail, Caesar can reach the heights of The Big Lebowski (1998).
