Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming to Netflix in September

Out of all the times I have done this Netflix article, I don’t know if there has been this strong of a month ever.  The five movies that I have listed here I would consider all to be masterpieces.  They are all very different in terms of genre, and yet still masterworks in their respective genres.  Here are my picks for the best movies coming to Netflix in September.

5 – MULAN (Tony Bancroft & Barry Cook, 1998)

I’m kicking off this list with one of the best Disney princesses ever drawn.  Mulan is arguably the last great Disney Animated film during their tour de force run in the late 80’s and 90’s.  It has everything an iconic Disney movie should have.  It has an awesome princess, catchy songs, a memorable story, and stunning animation.  But what makes Mulan better than all the rest is that Mulan isn’t your usual princess.  She’s a badass.  She isn’t rocking a dress and singing in a forest with wild animals.  She goes to the army to defend her country and her family.  Never before had a princess done this and defied genre norms.  The movie also features Eddie Murphy doing some of his best work as the trusty sidekick Mushu.  Mulan is a Disney classic.

4 – JAWS (Steven Spielberg, 1974)

Steven Spielberg invented the modern blockbuster with Jaws.  He showed he was a master of the craft of filmmaking by taking such a simply concept and turning it into a true masterpiece.  He made audiences fear swimming in the ocean all while only showing the shark for brief moments at the end.  His camera techniques are something to behold and the character depth is something rarely seen in modern movies today.  This is a cinematic game-changer that is endlessly rewatchable and a showcase in filmmaking.

3 – DEAD POETS SOCIETY (Peter Weir, 1989)

Dead Poets Society is a wonderful film.  Led by one of the best performances of Robin Williams’ career, this a beautiful, heartbreaking film about freedom and individuality.  This is one of the most emotional movies I have ever seen in my life.  I have never cried in a movie before, but this is a movie that almost made that feat happen.  From the iconic, “Oh Captain, my Captain!”, to the tragic story of one of the characters, you can’t help but get a lump in your through watching this movie.  Compelling, inspiring, and perfectly crafted, this is one that will pull at the heartstrings.

2 – GANGS OF NEW YORK (Martin Scorsese, 2002)

Gangs of New York is the most important film of my life.  This was the film that opened by eyes to what cinema really is.  It was my introduction to my favorite director, Martin Scorsese, and is the movie that led me to watch Goodfellas (1990), Taxi Driver (1976), and Raging Bull (1980) and learn about other filmmakers like Spielberg, Kubrick, Coppola, and many, many others.  Daniel Day-Lewis gives an iconic performance as Bill ‘The Butcher’ Cutting, and this was the performance that started Leonardo DiCaprio’s rise from teen heart-throb to legitimate actor and the Hollywood icon he is today.  This is one of Scorsese’s more divisive films, splitting audiences from people who love it (myself) to people who think it is one of his lesser works.  I urge everyone to watch this one.  This is a bold, epic, masterful passion project from a true master.

1 – PULP FICTION (Quentin Tarantino, 1994)

In my eyes, Pulp Fiction is the second greatest movie of all-time, following Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas (1990).  This is a movie that changed the cinematic landscape forever, producing a number of copycats all of whom failed to come close to Pulp Fiction’s greatness.  This put Quentin Tarantino on the map as a director and launched the career he has today.  If you haven’t seen this movie, do yourself a service and see one of the greatest movies to ever be created.
