Sundance 2017 – A Ghost Story

A Ghost Story is the definition of eerie.  This is an unsettling, creepy, challenging movie about life after death.

On the surface, A Ghost Story is about a ghost who haunts a house and all of it its occupants.  However, this is a complex, mediative piece about life after death.  The ghost in the movie casually watches over every occupant of the house, from a widow, to a family, to a business.  Director David Lowery lets his camera linger, allowing scenes to play out until the very last moment.  We watch the occupants do everything and anything, making us feel like a ghost ourselves.  The occupants can’t see us, yet we can see them.  It’s brilliant filmmaking.  We also get a haunting score and beautiful set design that make the movie esthetically pleasing.

I can’t say a lot about this movie without giving a lot away.  This is a movie that needs to be seen multiple times.  I wanted to watch it immediately after the credits finished rolling.  This is a movie that also warrants discussion about the themes and the events that take place.

This is probably the shortest review I’ve ever written, but just know that A Ghost Story is a film you need to see and a film that will have you thinking for a long, long time afterward.
