Review – Terminator Genisys

I don’t go to the movies to see bad movies.  I don’t ever want a movie to be bad because then it just wastes my time and money.  But, Terminator Genisys was one I had a bad feeling about from the beginning.  From the awful, spoilerific trailer, to the current state of Hollywood, and the casting, this movie had all the makings to fail.

I don’t want to toot my own horn or anything, but I could not have been more right.  Terminator Genisys is an awful movie that has none of the fun or spirit of the original two.

The plot is too confusing for its own good and makes it so that the originals never existed.  We are in the future with John Conner (Jason Clarke) and Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney), leaders of the resistance against the terminators.  When Conner sends Reese back to 1984 to save his mother Sarah Conner (Emilia Clarke) and save the future from a T-800 that was sent back in time.  But an unexpected event happens in the space time continuum and Reese is thrown into an alternate universe where nothing is what was planned.  He is now an ally with a T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger), who has been with Sarah Conner since she was nine and they are trying to save the planet from Genysis, an internet program that is basically the offspring of Skynet, the evil company from the original movies, in the year 2017.  So now Sarah, Kyle, and the T-800 have to get to the year 2017 and stop Genysis from happening.  The kicker is, the Genysis super solider is none other than John Conner.  So now, the three of them have to stop John Conner and his plan of world domination and save the universe.

It’s cool if you stopped reading half way through the extremely long and preposterous plot summary, because it feels exactly the same while watching it.  With the whole space time continuum thing, it completely negates everything and anything that happened in the originals, which is stupid, since the first two are the only good ones.  It was as if the screenwriters wanted nothing to do with original story and tried to create their own world.  They would have been better off attempting a remake than add a stupid plot twist within the same universe and negating the originals.

The acting is even worse that the story.  Schwarzenegger tries his best with what he has, but once he has to says more than five syllables, which was a majority of the movie, it just turned into a giant, stereotypical Schwarzenegger mumble.  I don’t watch “Game of Thrones”, but I have to assume Emilia Clarke is better in that show than she was in this movie.  I think she got cast because she sort of looks like Linda Hamilton, the original Sarah Conner, but she did not convey the toughness that was needed to play one of the all-time great cinematic heroines ever.  She also had trouble delivering witty one liners.  Jason Clarke, you know better.  After being brilliant in 2012’s Zero Dark Thirty and giving solid performances in Lawless (2012) and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), you lowered yourself to this garbage?  C’mon man.  And let me not forget the worst of all, Jai Courtney.  As Kyle Reese, my distain for this man grew even larger.  He has no screen presence, no charisma, and can’t read a line for his life.  His relationship with Clarke is painstakingly awkward.

On top of the terrible story and awful acting, the special effects are garbage and action sequences lack all excitement.

Terminator Genisys is one of the very worst movies of 2015.  It is a preposterous, action-less, waste of time with some awful performances.  This is a film series that will hopefully end it’s run with this terrible movie.
