Review – Table 19

Table 19 is about sad people on a happy day.  Table 19 represents the very last table at a wedding reception, a sort-of “rejects” table where you dump random business friends, distant family members, and friendly ex’s at.

At this table, we have Eloise (Anna Kendrick), the ex-girlfriend of the best man in the wedding and a long-time friend of the bride, Jerry and Bina Kepp (Craig Robinson and Lisa Kudrow), a dysfunctional married couple who own a diner, Walter (Stephen Merchant), a distant relative recently released from prison, Rezno (Tony Revolori), an awkward teenage looking to hook up with any attractive girl at this wedding, and Jo (June Squibb), the family’s former nanny.  This diverse group of misfits all miserably sit through this event, dealing with personal issues and helping each other out the best they can.

Hijinks and shenanigans takes place through out the entire reception.  Eloise can’t get over her recent break up to the best man, Jerry and Bina always fight, Walter is disowned by the family and tries to lie his way through everything, Rezno has the worst pick up lines in the history of man, and Jo likes to smoke weed.  Combine all those with vulnerable emotions and fragile objects, and you get a very funny, sweet, easy going watch.

I loved this cast, particularly Kendrick, Robinson, and Revolori, who steals the movie with his furry bow-tie and constant failures.  The cast is charming enough and filled with great comedic moments that allowed me to look past the clichés and over-the-top hijinks that happen towards the end of the film.  You know exactly where this movie is going to go, but it is the chemistry of this group that makes the movie work as a whole.

At the end of the day, Table 19 is about flaws and imperfections on a perfect day.  Everybody has flaws and everybody is going through something bigger underneath the surface and, it just so happens, these flaws come out on this wedding day.  This isn’t a perfect film, but the cast, comedy, and sweetness makes this an incredibly enjoyable film.
