Top 5 – Scariest Movie Scenes

With it being Halloween, let’s talk scary movies.  This list will look at specific scenes that scared the hell out of me. SPOILERS AHEAD, so be cautious if you haven’t seen any of these.  You can watch each clip by clicking on the title of the movie.

5- “One of the Big Boys” – Scream 2 (Wes Craven, 1998)

Knowing the ins and outs of the horror game should be able to help you in all situations.  Except in this one.  When Randy (Jamie Kennedy) gets a call from the killer, the killer goes after his manhood, saying he will never be the leading man and he’s worthless.  Randy then goes off, calling the killer small time and saying some derogatory things about the killers this killer is impersonating, which if you know the ending, made the killer really upset.  And then in the blink of an eye, the killer jumps out, grabs Randy, and throws him into the news van, where Randy is mutilated by over a dozen stab wounds.  Usually jump scares are only good one time, but not this one.  Even when getting the screenshot for this scene, I jumped while watching it.  It is probably the funnest time I’ve had being scared and still makes me jump today.

4- “The Truth About Mother” – Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960)

The shower scene is the most iconic, but this is scariest.  The ending of Psycho is so scary because of the shocking twist, the way Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) looks, and the iconic music.  The music shrieks with the audience as we find out who killed Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) and the truth about Norman’s mother.  I don’t want to say too much for those who haven’t seen this movie, (If you haven’t seen Psycho, stop reading this article and see it NOW), but this is probably the scariest scene from any Alfred Hitchcock film.

3- “Evil Lives” – Halloween (John Carpenter, 1978)

How do you kill a man that is the definition of pure evil?  You would think stabbing him in the eye with a hanger and then stabbing him with a large kitchen knife would do it.  But that’s exactly what Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) did and she was wrong.  When trapped in a closet and Michael Myers (Tony Moran) trying to break in, the quick thinking Laurie takes a metal hanger, turns it into a shiv, and stabs Myers in the eye.  This causes him to drop his knife, which Laurie then grabs and stabs him in the torso.  Laurie gets the kids out of the house and takes a quick breather to recuperate.  In the background we see Myers rise up, look towards Laurie, and then proceed to stand up.  It is startling and makes you worried about Laurie and if she can ever escape from Myers.

2- “The Night Vision Goggles” – The Silence of the Lambs (Jonathon Demme, 1991)

The Silence of the Lambs isn’t technically a horror movie, but that doesn’t make it any less scary.  Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) is one of the great cinematic villains of all-time and Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine) is as creepy as they come.  When Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) enters Bill’s house for questioning, she quickly realizes he is the person she’s been looking for the whole movie.  After a quick squirmish, Bill cuts the lights and Clarice is in the dark.  Bill then puts on night vision goggles and Demme shoots the scene through Bills point of view.  We see Clarice struggle while Bill just stares at her and breathes heavily.  This is one of those moments everyone talks to the screen and yells, “HE’S RIGHT THERE!”  It will have you so far on the edge of your seat, you will probably fall off.

1- “The Spider Walk” – The Exorcist (William Friedkin, 1973)

I could have made an entire list of the scariest moments from The Exorcist.  From the 360 degree head turn to the final exorcism, The Exorcist is the is filled with terrifying images.  But, this scene has haunted me since the first time I saw this film.  This takes the prize as the scariest moment because of its lasting effect and the fact that it still scares the hell out of me every time I see it.  What makes it so scary is the unexpectedness of it.  Through out the film, every time someone enters Reagan’s (Linda Blair) room, we know something is going to go down.  But in this scene, Chris (Ellen Burstyn) is reacting to having just recently found out one of her friends has died.  She then hears a noise by the stairs and we see Reagan doing a spider crawl down the stairs with blood pouring out of her mouth and she makes an animalistic sound.  It is absolutely horrifying the scariest thing I have ever seen on film.
