Over the past few years, the Best Actress field has been loaded with terrific performances and 2018 was no different.  I could have easily expanded the 2018 field to ten nominees and I still would have snubbed a few.  This year’s nominees are all incredibly strong and are all from incredibly strong films that they carry.  With a nice mix of newcomers and veterans, including an actress who has never acted before battling it out…

Of the four acting categories, Best Supporting Actor is always my favorite.  This is a category that is always up in the air in terms of who is going to be nominated.  Will it be a past winner?  A wily veteran looking for their due?  A hot up-and-coming actor making a splash?  A great character actor who is moving up the ranks from “that guy” status?  Every year is full of a who’s who of…

This year’s Best Actor race is an interesting one.  Four of the actors nominated in the category this year have been nominated for Oscars in previous years, including one of them winning once.  The fifth nominee, and arguably the front runner at this point, is a rising star.  However, I would argue that there are only two good performances in this category this year.  I’m not going to say which two, but in my eyes,…

I’ll be straight up with it: this year’s Best Picture nominees are not great.  In fact, this is arguably the worst Best Picture line-up of the decade and one of the very worst of the century (the only year I could think that is worse than this one is 2009, the year Slumdog Millionaire took the world by storm and the final year for only five Best Picture nominees).  But, these are the nominees that we…

The 2019 Oscar nominations were announced this morning and, as usual, it didn’t go the way people thought.  There were surprises, snubs, and a few that most predicted.  Overall, the nominations are fine and almost exactly how I figured they would go, save for a few things.  There were some nominations that I loved, some that I hated, and some that literally had me scratching my head.  Here are those picks.        …
