2020 Golden Globe Predictions – Who Will/Should Win
Out of all the Oscar precursor awards, the Golden Globes are far and away the strangest. From the nominees to the winners, you never really know where the Globes are going to go. Last year, it seemed laughable the Globes went wild for Green Book and Bohemian Rhapsody, only find out it was a strong precursor for the Oscars. Who knows where the Hollywood Foreign Press will go this year, but I gave it whirl. Here are my predictions for who is going to win at the 77th Golden Globes and who I think should win.
This is also only for the MOVIES. I don’t watch enough T.V. to predict those.
BEST ORIGINAL SONG
“Beautiful Ghosts” – CATS
“(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” – Rocketman
“Into the Unknown” – Frozen 2
“Spirit” – The Lion King
“Stand Up” – Harriet
- I usually don’t bet against Disney in a song category, but Elton John is one of the few people could take them down.
WILL WIN – “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again”, Rocketman
SHOULD WIN – “Into the Unknown”, Frozen II
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
Motherless Brooklyn
Little Women
Joker
1917
Marriage Story
- 1917′s score is one of the key elements to the film’s success. But don’t be surprised if Joker comes out the victor.
WILL WIN – 1917
SHOULD WIN – 1917
BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
The Farewell
Les Misérables
Pain and Glory
Parasite
Portrait of a Lady on Fire
- Though The Farewell got another nomination, Parasite’s Best Director nomination shows how much the HFPA loves the film.
WILL WIN – Parasite
SHOULD WIN – Parasite
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
Frozen 2
The Lion King
Missing Link
Toy Story 4
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
- It still makes me laugh that The Lion King got nominated here. But chalk up another W for Pixar, marking the studio’s ninth win in fourteen years.
WILL WIN – Toy Story 4
SHOULD WIN – Toy Story 4
BEST SCREENPLAY
Marriage Story
Parasite
The Two Popes
Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood
The Irishman
- A loaded category. All films got multiple nominations and and have strong screenplays from great writers. I think this comes down to a battle between Quentin Tarantino and Noah Baumbach and I think the HFPA going to reward Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood a few times throughout the night.
WILL WIN – Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood
SHOULD WIN – Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A MOTON PICTURE
Annette Benning, The Report
Margot Robbie, Bombshell
Jennifer Lopez, Hustlers
Kathy Bates, Richard Jewell
Laura Dern, Marriage Story
- The HFPA loves stars and JLo will shine the brightest.
WILL WIN – Jennifer Lopez, Hustlers
SHOULD WIN – Jennifer Lopez, Hustlers
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A MOTON PICTURE
Tom Hanks, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
Al Pacino, The Irishman
Joe Pesci, The Irishman
Brad Pitt, Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood
Anthony Hopkins, The Two Popes
- A stellar line-up of Hollywood legends. I think the two Irishman actors will cancel each other out and Pitt will win out.
WILL WIN – Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood
SHOULD WIN – Joe Pesci, The Irishman
BEST ACTRESS – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Awkwafina, The Farewell
Ana de Armas, Knives Out
Beanie Feldstein, Booksmart
Emma Thompson, Late Night
Cate Blanchett, Where’d You Go Bernadette
- Far and away the weakest category of the night, Awkwafina is your clear winner and I can’t wait for her acceptance speech.
WILL WIN – Awkwafina, The Farewell
SHOULD WIN – Awkwafina, The Farewell
BEST ACTOR – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Daniel Craig, Knives Out
Roman Griffin Davis, Jojo Rabbit
Leonardo DiCaprio, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood
Taron Egerton, Rocketman
Eddie Murphy, Dolemite Is My Name
- A three-horse-race between Murphy, Egerton, and DiCaprio. The HFPA loves all these movies, but the Eddie Murphy comeback story is hard to ignore even if they love DiCaprio, who is a twelve time nominee and three time winner.
WILL WIN – Eddie Murphy, Dolemite is My Name
SHOULD WIN – Leonardo DiCaprio, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood
BEST ACTRESS – DRAMA
Cynthio Erivo, Harriet
Scarlett Johansson, Marriage Story
Saoirse Ronan, Little Women
Charlize Theron, Bombshell
Renée Zellweger, Judy
- Renée Zellweger’s Oscar run starts now.
WILL WIN – Renée Zellweger, Judy
SHOULD WIN – Scarlett Johansson, Marriage Story
BEST ACTOR – DRAMA
Christian Bale, Ford v. Ferrari
Antonio Banderas, Pain and Glory
Adam Driver, Marriage Story
Joaquin Phoenix, Joker
Jonathan Pryce, The Two Popes
- A coin flip between Driver and Phoenix. Both performances are great, yet drastically different. I’m going with the showier one the two.
WILL WIN – Joaquin Phoenix, Joker
SHOULD WIN – Adam Driver, Marriage Story
BEST DIRECTOR
Bong Joon-Ho, Parasite
Sam Mendes, 1917
Quentin Tarantino, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
Martin Scorsese, The Irishman
Todd Phillips, Joker
- A doozy of a line-up here that will come down to Quentin Tarantino, Bong Joon-Ho, and Martin Scorsese. Neither Tarantino nor Joon-Ho have won before, while Scorsese has won three times before. I think Tarantino’s prize will come in writing and Joon-Ho’s in Foreign Language Film. Marty pulls it out in a close one.
WILL WIN – Martin Scorsese, The Irishman
SHOULD WIN – Martin Scorsese, The Irishman
BEST MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Dolemite is My Name
Jojo Rabbit
Knives Out
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Rocketman
- A Tarantino movie has never won Best Picture at the Globes. That time has finally come.
WILL WIN – Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood
SHOULD WIN – Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood
BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
1917
The Irishman
Joker
Marriage Story
The Two Popes
- With Marriage Story and The Two Popes missing Best Director, they are on the outside looking in. 1917 seems like a film the HFPA would vote for, and they clearly love Joker, but I think Scorsese’s crime epic pulls it out in the end.
WILL WIN – The Irishman
SHOULD WIN – The Irishman
