Top 5 – Movies Coming Out in July
July kicks off the second half of 2018 with a bang. We get a number of blockbusters, franchises, and indies coming out, including some of my most anticipated movies of the year. Here are my picks for the most exciting movies coming out in July!
5 – HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3: SUMMER VACATION (Genndy Tartakovsky, July 13)
I am not ashamed to say it, but I am genuinely a big fan of the Hotel Transylvania series. I think they are fun, enjoyable, hilarious movies that resonate for kids and adults. I also think it is Adam Sandler’s best movie role in lord knows how long. The fact that it’s a trilogy is wild, but one I am happy to see, and in this one, the gang heads on a cruise to the Bermuda Triangle, which should be a blast. If this third one is anything like the first two, consider the Hotel Transylvania Trilogy one of the most under-appreciated trilogies ever.
4 – SORRY TO BOTHER YOU (Boots Riley, July 13)
Sorry to Bother You is the movie unique movie of 2018. Writer/director Boots Riley has created a film unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. A wildly funny social satire that will have your head spinning. It’s smart, hilarious, twisted, and brilliant. I love the cast, as the great Lakieth Stanfield and Tessa Thompson finally get their due as leads, and Armie Hammer gives the most batshit performance of his career and maybe the year. I can’t give away anymore details about this one, just see it for yourself and be mesmerized.
3 – THE EQUALIZER 2 (Antoine Fuqua, July 20)
There are two kinds of Denzel Washington movies: Oscar-Denzel movies and Fun-Denzel movies. Occasionally you get one that doesn’t land in one of those categories, but generally speaking, Denzel is either going to be nominated for an Oscar or he’s having a ball in a wild action flick. The Equalizer is one of my favorite Fun-Denzel movies. It’s an absolute blast and incredibly rewatchable. Did it need a sequel? No, but there are a lot of other, less worthy movies that have gotten sequels that didn’t deserve one. This is going to be another slick, violent, Denzel blast, ripe for summer viewing.
2 – SKYSCRAPER (Rawson Marshall Thurber, July 13)
Skyscraper is what summer movies are all about. We have the biggest star in the world in a big budget, high concept action thriller. What more do you want? Dwayne Johnson stars as an amputee father who desperately tries to save his family from a burning skyscraper. This is the kind of movie they don’t make anymore. The action-thriller of the late 70’s and early 80’s, like The Towering Inferno and Die Hard, the produce some of the most exciting cinematic experiences ever. This is a movie that will be seen on the biggest, loudest screen possible, because that is the type of screen this movie deserves.
1 – MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT (Christopher McQuarrie, July 27)
The Mission: Impossible franchise is one of the best we have in cinema today. This is the sixth film in the franchise and they have only gotten better as they have gone on. Tom Cruise proves time and time again why he is the greatest movie star of our generation, continuously giving great performances and pushing himself with his death defying stunts. Fallout adds a few new faces to the already stacked returning cast, including Angela Bassett and Henry Cavill, who looks like a lean, mean, fighting machine. Christopher McQuarrie knows this franchise and knows how to give us a thrilling spectacle with a strong story to it. I can’t wait to see what this franchise has in-store this time around.
