Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming to Netflix in November
Another month, another batch of movies and shows on Netflix. This month, however, is a little weaker than most. Still some good titles coming out, including one of the most under appreciated masterpieces of the 21st century. Here are my picks of the best movies coming to Netflix in November.
You can see the full list of everything coming to Netflix this month right here.
5 – THE DETAILS (Jacob Estes, 2011)
My first time attending the Sundance Film Festival was in 2011 and during that festival, I saw a movie called The Details. Starring Tobey Maguire, Elizabeth Banks, and Laura Linney and a good reception (from what I remember) I was certain this movie was going to get a release. But the movie vanished and wasn’t heard of again, save for a micro release of about ten days in 2012. This is an incredibly weird movie, but one I remember laughing at and genuinely enjoying. I’m excited to give this one another whirl.
4 – MUDBOUND (Dee Rees, 2017)
I saw Mudbound at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. It was towards the end of the festival, so exhaustion was in full effect, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t leave a lasting impression. Dee Rees has made a powerful film about two men who struggle with racism and their new home life after returning home to Mississippi from war. This is a tough movie to watch, as Rees doesn’t pull her punches and shows us the brutality of life in Mississippi in the 40’s. This all-star cast of Garrett Hedlund, Carey Mulligan, Jason Mitchell, Jason Clarke, and Mary J. Blige are sensational, particularly Mitchell and Blige. This movie has been getting a lot of Oscar buzz and could be a game changer if it becomes the first streaming movie to get nominated for Best Picture.
3 – MEN IN BLACK (Barry Sonnenfeld, 1997)
Men in Black has something for everyone. This is a fun, exciting, hilarious science fiction film featuring two great lead performances and great action. Will Smith is at his absolute best in this film. He is quick, cocky, funny, and his teaming with the stoic, no-frills Tommy Lee Jones is comedy perfection. And we get an excellent Vincent D’Onofrio, with the assistance of some great makeup, as our disgustingly fun and menacing villain. The subsequent sequels weren’t nearly as good, but the original is one of the best science fiction movies of the last 25 years.
2 – MARVEL’S THE PUNISHER (Steve Lightfoot, 2017)
Daredevil: Season 2 (2016) is one of the best seasons of television I have ever watched and a lot of that has to do with the addition of Punisher. Jon Bernthal is perfection as Frank Castle, a.k.a Punisher, a former military man hellbent on revenge after his wife and child are murdered. Now, we get a sort of origin story for Castle and I cannot wait to see it. It doesn’t look so much like a comic book show as it does a vigilante thriller. This is going to be a dark, brutal movie and a showcase for Bernthal to flesh out all the deep emotions Castle has. I love Jon Bernthal in anything he is in and am excited for what is sure to be another great Marvel show.
1 – MICHAEL CLAYTON (Tony Gilroy, 2007)
Michael Clayton is one of the most under appreciated movies of the 2000’s, if not ever. It is a slow-burning, thinking man’s thriller that is full of great writing, masterful performances, and constant twists and turns. George Clooney gives the best performance of his career as our titular character, a “fixer” for a law firm who gets caught up in a multi-billion dollar class action lawsuit after one of the lawyers has a mental breakdown and moral epiphany. The film also stars Tilda Swinton, who won a well-deserved Oscar for her performance as a rival lawyer in the lawsuit and Tom Wilkinson is brilliant as the lawyer who has the mental breakdown. Tony Gilroy created one of the best directorial debuts of the 2000’s and a movie I consider to be a true masterpiece.
