Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming Out in September
Now that the summer movie season is over, we get a brief month off before it is my favorite movie season: Oscar season. This September is giving us a slight hint of what we will be in for over the next few months. We got a few Oscar contenders, a franchise, and a horror reboot as the highlights. Here are my picks for the best movies coming out in September.
5 – IT (Andy Muschietti, September 8)
I don’t usually get excited for horror movies, but It looks truly terrifying. Based of the classic Stephen King novel of the same name, the film follows a group of kids as they are terrorized by a horrifying clown Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård). The movie looks atmospheric, scary, and well made, with some striking visuals. At at a shorter runtime than the 1990 made for T.V. movie, the pacing is sure to be relentless. It’s going to be a tall task to exceed the iconic T.V. movie and Tim Curry’s legendary performance, but I think this one will do it.
4 – KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE (Matthew Vaughn, September 22)
The first Kingsman (2014) was a surprise smash hit. Coming from a lesser known comic, The Kingsman was fresh, fun, and exciting. It introduced us to the acting talents of Taron Egerton and showed us a side of Colin Firth and Samuel L. Jackson that we had never seen before. The sequel brings back the characters we loved from the first and adds a little American flare to it, bringing in a group of Southern gentlemen, played by Jeff Bridges, Channing Tatum, and Pedro Pascal, to help the Kingsman after their base is blown up by our new villain, played by Julianne Moore. With the great cast and Matthew Vaughn at the helm, this is sure to be yet another entertaining entry into the surprise franchise.
3 – BATTLE OF THE SEXES (Jonathon Dayton & Valery Ferris, September 22)
Emma Stone looks for Oscar number two by playing legendary tennis star Billie Jean King in Battle of the Sexes. This film follows the infamous ‘Battle of the Sexes’ between King and sexist hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carrell), as the two battled in the press and on the tennis court in a battle of superiority. Stone and Carrell look excellent in their roles as King and Riggs and are ripe for Oscar contention. The movie just had its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival and reviews have been soaring. It looks like Dayton and Ferris have made an inspirational, timely, and crowd-pleasing sports flick.
2 – AMERICAN MADE (Doug Liman, September 29)
I always get excited for a Tom Cruise movie. He is one of the best actors and truest movie stars we have working today. Hell, I was even excited for him in The Mummy (2017), though that didn’t turn out so well. American Made looks like the perfect combination of Cruise’s stardom and acting ability. It tells the story of Barry Seal (Cruise), a pilot who goes undercover for the CIA as a drug runner. Cruise looks great, as does Domhnall Gleason playing the CIA agent who recruits Seal. The trailer has a kinetic energy that is sure to have us amused, entertained, thrilled, and captivated.
1 – mother! (Darren Aronofsky, September 15)
Darren Aronofsky is one of the great auteurs we have working today. He has a very gritty, raw style and digs into the human psyche deeper than any filmmaker dares. After massive success with Black Swan (2010), Aronofsky went the Hollywood route with Noah, a lackluster film that was clearly a product of the studio and not Aronofsky. His latest film, mother!, looks like Aronofsky is back to his old tricks. The trailer looks horrifying, the posters are reminiscent of Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby (1968), and the cast of Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, and Michelle Pfeiffer (whom I’m really excited to see), all look spectacular. This is one of my most anticipated movies of 2017 and I cannot wait to see what Aronofsky has in store for us.
