Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming Out in October

October might be my favorite movie month of the year.  It’s right in the middle of the fall festival circuit, Oscar season is in full motion, and the month is loaded with interesting titles, from family films to Oscar hopefuls.  This month is loaded with potentially great movies.  The directors and actors that are on display this month are some of the best.  We got satirical comedies, indie drams, a controversial comic book film, and an action movie that could change the cinematic landscape as we know it.  Here are my picks for the most exciting movies coming out in October.

 

 

 

5 – JOJO RABBIT (Taika Waititi, October 18)

  • Who doesn’t love a satirical comedy about Nazi’s and an imaginary Adolf Hitler?  Sounds like something right out of the mind of Mel Brooks, but it’s actually from the mind of Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi.  Waititi also stars in the film as, you guessed it, Adolf Hitler, who here is the idiotic imaginary friend of young Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis) who discovers his mother is hiding a young Jewish girl in their attic.  Winner of the Audience Award at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, an award that nearly guarantees an Oscar nomination for Best Picture (nine of the last ten winners of this award have gone on to be nominated for Best Picture), Jojo Rabbit has the potential to be the most subversive and best comedy of the year.

 

 

4 – PARASITE (Joon-Ho Bong, October 11)

  • Since it’s debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it won the top prize, Joon-Ho Bong’s Parasite has a been a film that has been the most talked about movie of 2019.  Everything that I have read about this movie has told me to go into the film with as little knowledge as possible and that is exactly what I am doing.  I haven’t watched a trailer, haven’t read any reviews, and only kind of know what it is about.  But everything I’ve heard about this film is that it is a truly special film.  A twisty, wild, darkly funny ride that you won’t see coming and a foreign-language film that could be a major player come Oscar time.

 

 

3 – JOKER (Todd Phillips, October 4)

  • When it was announced that Todd Phillips, director of comedy gems like The Hangover and Old School, was making a stand-alone movie about the clown prince of Gotham starring Oscar nominee and method-actor extraordinaire Joaquin Phoenix, I was intrigued because everything about the film sounded insane.  But this is now a movie that I, or anyone,  can’t afford to miss.  Sure, the idea of the movie sounds interesting, but the fact that Joker won best film at the Venice Film Festival and is gaining a ton of Oscar buzz has me really interested because I just can’t wrap my head around the fact that the movie is that good and that a Todd Phillips-directed Joker movie could be nominated for Best Picture.  I have no idea what this movie is going to be, but I’m excited to find out.

 

 

2 – THE LIGHTHOUSE (Robert Eggers, October 18)

  • The Lighthouse looks at two lighthouse keepers who are stationed on a remote New England island in 1890’s.  Think it sounds boring?  Well what if I told you it was directed by Robert Eggers, the same genius who made the hauntingly brilliant The VVitch?  Still not sold?  Well what if I told you the two lighthouse workers were played by Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe?  Yeah, I had a feeling that would do it.  Who knows what Eggers has in-store for for us.  But from the trailers, the film looks gorgeous and absolutely insane and unnerving.  I cannot wait to see this one and see if Eggers is the real deal.

 

 

1 – GEMINI MAN (Ang Lee, October 11)

  • What makes Gemini Man the most interesting and exciting movie coming in October, as well as one of my most anticipated movies of 2019, is what it could do for the medium of film.  Director Ang Lee is trying to change the way we view movies.  Almost all movies are shot at 24 frames-per-second.  What Lee is doing with Gemini Man, and did with his last film Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk, is shoot them in 120 frames-per-second, five times faster than your typical movie.  The effect that this has is make the events happening on screen feel more real and life-like.  You know how soap operas look very crisp and very clear?  Well those are usually shot at 60 frames-per-second.  So imagine a movie that is double that?  It’s going to be weird and jarring, but it is pushing the cinematic landscape in a new direction.  Plus, in an action packed starring Will Smith getting the newly popular de-aging process, this is a movie that could really shift the cinematic landscape, which is something to be extremely excited about.
