Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming Out in May
2019 is blowing right past us, as we are already heading into the summer movie season! I know everyone is still hyped about Avengers: Endgame, but that isn’t the only movie coming out this year. May is kicking off the summer in the most perfect way possible. We get a great mix of all genres, from action to indie to Pokémon, and get a couple of the year’s most anticipated sequels. Here are my picks for the most exciting movies coming out in May.
5 – ALADDIN (Guy Ritchie, May 24)
- The first trailer for Aladdin was a real dud and really had me skeptical about the film. However, the most recent trailer gave me a lot of hope and the movie looks pretty awesome. I like the relatively unknown cast, I think Will Smith looks solid as the Genie, though filling the shoes of Robin Williams and his legendary performance is quite the task, and visually it looks interesting. I am not a very big Guy Ritchie fan, but I think Disney will rein him in and not let the film go off the rails. I am a fan of Disney’s recent stint of live-action remakes and Aladdin looks like another winner.
4 – BOOKSMART (Olivia Wilde, May 24)
- Booksmart was not a movie I had heard of until is made its world premiere at this year’s SXSW Film Festival, where the film debuted to raves. Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut has best been described as “female Superbad“, as two high schoolers (Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein), both of whom are academic superstars, realize that they spent too much time studying and not enough time having fun. In an effort to make up for lost time, the two decide to pack four years of partying into one night. Dever is a delightful actress and Feldstein has been making moves in movies like Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and Lady Bird, and this looks like it could be a breakout hit for the both of them. Booksmart has the potential to be summer’s best comedy.
3 – GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS (Michael Dougherty, May 31)
- Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla was one of the big surprises of 2014. It was a smart, thrilling monster flick reminiscent of Jaws and classic Godzilla films. King of the Monsters looks even bigger and more insane, as we are introduced to even more monsters in this Monsters Universe, like Rodan and Mothra, classics from the golden age of Godzilla. The cast is unreal, with Millie Bobby Brown, Vera Farmiga, Kyle Chandler, Sally Hawkins, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Thomas Middleditch, and Ken Wantanabe, who reprises his roll from the first film. Godzilla: King of the Monsters looks to be king of summer.
2 – POKÉMON DETECTIVE PIKACHU (Rob Letterman, May 10)
- Detective Pikachu looks like an absolute blast. I haven’t been into Pokémon since I was in middle school, but watching these trailers got me all sorts of excited. The film looks like it is focusing on the original 151 Pokémon (the ones I grew up with) and have implemented them into this modern world perfectly, keeping their powers, yet having them do real-world tasks. I also love Ryan Reynolds voicing the adorable Pikachu, who is far more than just a regular Pokémon, but a world class detective too, deerstalker hat and all, and I can’t wait to see the blend of noir and video game mixed together. This looks like an incredibly fun film that has the potential to be the best video adaptation ever.
1 – JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 – PARABELLUM (Chad Stahleski, May 17)
- Who would have thought that a small, simple hitman movie starring Keanu Reeves would grow into a cinematic phenomenon and possibly one of the greatest trilogies ever made? What started with a man getting revenge on the people responsible for killing his dog has turned into a gigantic world of hitmen, hotels, gold coins, and more dogs. Parabellum looks to finish the trilogy off in style, as Wick (a legendary Reeves) has a bounty on his head and all the hitmen and hit-women around the world are after him. But killing Mr. Wick is never easy, especially when he gets a little assistance from some friends and a shit-load of guns. John Wick: Chapter 3 is one of my most anticipated movies of the summer and the year and I cannot wait to see how this trilogy ends.
