Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming Out in March

I haven’t done one of these lists in a while.  I got caught up with Sundance in January and February was a tough month personally.  But it’s back now and it is a perfect month to bring this back.  March has become a pretty good month for movies over the years and this year, it’s a great one.  Featuring a fun little thriller I saw last year, one of the biggest movies of the year, and arguably the biggest follow-up of 2019, March is bringing the goods.  Here are my picks for the five most exciting movies coming out in March.

 

 

 

 

 

5 – THE BEACH BUM (Harmony Korine, March 29)

  • Harmony Korine is not everyone’s cup of tea.  With films like Kids (he only wrote the film), Gummo, and Trash Humpers under his belt, Korine makes movies unlike anyone in cinema, yet ones that polarize those who see them.  However, with Korine’s last film, Spring Breakers, Korine masterfully crafted a delirious spring break nightmare featuring an iconic performance by James Franco.  Spring Breakers is one of my favorite movies of the decade, so of course I am going to be excited for his follow-up film.  The Beach Bum doesn’t look like it is going to be nearly as good a Spring Breakers, though that movie was a freight train that came out of nowhere.  But the stoner comedy does look like a blast, and boasts a spectacular cast of Matthew McConaughey, Snoop Dogg, Isla Fisher, Jonah Hill, Zac Efron, and Martin Lawrence, who I can’t wait to see.  This is Korine’s most impressive cast, so let’s hope translates into something great.

 

 

 

4 – DUMBO (Tim Burton, March 29)

  • Dumbo is the latest in Disney’s live-action remake tear and it looks like it could be their weirdest one yet.  Tim Burton is directing this one, a choice I do not hate.  Though Burton may not be on the run like he once was back in the 90’s, I still think he is one of the more fascinating directors and, regardless of film quality, his movies always look great.  Also, his last film, Miss Peregrin’s Home for Peculiar Children, was actually a pretty cool film and was reminiscent of old Burton, with gothic tones, creepy sets, and a passion for the strange and unusual.  With Disney being such a big studio and really strict when it comes to their properties, it’ll be interesting to see how an auteur like Burton works within this tight of a studio.  Regardless, Dumbo is sure to be a visual treat.

 

 

 

3 – GRETA (Neil Jordan, March 1)

  • Back in September, I was in Toronto for mini vacation and the Toronto International Film Festival was happening while I was there, so I was able to catch one flick during my short stay.  That movie was Neil Jordan’s Greta and I loved this movie.  A weird, twisty, Hitchcockian thriller with stellar performances from Isabelle Huppert, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Maika Monroe.  This is a movie that will keep you guessing until the very end.  It’s disturbing, shocking, eerie, and yet kind of funny at moments.  Oscar winning writer/director hasn’t made a good movie in quite sometime, but Greta brings him back top form.

 

 

 

2 – CAPTAIN MARVEL (Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck, March 8)

  • The first of three Marvel movies dropping this year is one of the most important for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and for the Avengers: Endgame story.  Captain Marvel marks the MCU’s first female-led film, which is incredibly depressing as this cinematic universe launched eleven years ago.  Better late than never I guess?  Anyway, Oscar winner Brie Larson plays our titular hero, and we get some de-aged Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury which should be interesting.  I’m excited to see how they tie this into Endgame, as we know Captain Marvel will have a huge impact on that film and could be the saving grace for the Avengers against Thanos.  This is bound to be another fun, entertaining entry into the MCU.

 

 

 

1 – US (Jordan Peele, March 22)

  • Jordan Peele’s debut, Get Out, is one of the very best movies of the decade and one of the best debut films I have ever seen.  I shockingly twisted, darkly funny, delirious, and smart look at race in America.  A follow-up to such a great debut is always tough, but based on the trailers, it looks like Peele has done it with Us.  This new horror film dissects the scariest enemy of all: ourselves.  The trailers look horrifying, yet don’t give anything away as to what is actually happening.  This is one of my most anticipated movies of the year and I am incredibly excited I get to see it so soon.
