Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming Out in March
March has become a formidable month for excellent movies. Over the last few years, we have seen a great films like Zootopia (2016), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), Spring Breakers (2013), and 21 Jump Street (2012) come out in the March, launching a break from the dreaded winter blues of January and February. What does March 2017 hold for us? Let’s have a look at the five most intriguing movies coming out in March.
5 – THE BELKO EXPERIMENT (Greg McLean, March 17)
This movie looks batshit crazy. It has a cast of familiar faces, like Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy), John C. McGinley (Scrubs), and John Gallagher Jr. (Newsroom) and is produced by James Gunn (director of Guardians of the Galaxy). I love the concept of an office building being taken over and the workers are forced to follow a mysterious voice. This is going to be a violent, rowdy good time.
4 – THE GHOST IN THE SHELL (Rupert Sanders, March 31)
Similar to The Belko Experiment, The Ghost in the Shell looks batshit crazy, as well. I don’t really know what this movie is about. Something about artificial intelligence I think? Whatever the case, the trailers are spectacular. Reminiscent of Blade Runner (1982), it is filled with jaw-dropping effects, slick action, and Scarlett Johansson looking as good as ever. This could be one of the best sci-fi movies of the year.
3 – KONG: SKULL ISLAND (Jordan Vogt-Roberts, March 10)
I loved, LOVED, Peter Jackson’s 2005 King Kong. It was perfect in my mind, with astounding visuals, a great story, and stellar performances. Now, we get a the legendary ape in a new light and in a new universe. I’m pretty sure this movie is going to be just a re-imagining of the same story, but this time, it is in the same universe as 2014’s Godzilla, which will set up the eventual showdown between the two monsters in 2020. I love the all-star cast, I love the way Kong looks, and the film looks intense as all hell.
2 – LOGAN (James Mangold, March 3)
It was really tough not putting this film at number one. The only reason it’s at number two is because the first two films in this series were really underwhelming. This is, supposably, Hugh Jackman’s final g0-round as the legendary mutant and he looks to go out on the highest note possible. It’s the first time we get to see Wolverine in an R-rated light, which will surely heighten the violence and grittiness of the film. Jackman looks great, as does Patrick Stewart, who reprises his role as Professor Charles Xavier. Much like Deadpool did last year, this could be a game-changing comic book film.
1 – BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (Bill Condon, March 17)
Disney has done a spectacular job with the live-action remakes of their classic films, with Cinderella (2015) and the jaw-dropping The Jungle Book (2016) and Beauty and the Beast looks to be their best effort yet. Everything about this movie looks great, from Emma Watson as Belle, to the visuals (the Beast looks spectacular), the glimpses of the songs, to the production design, which looks exactly like it was ripped right from the animated classic. Beauty and the Beast was the first animated movie ever to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, could it repeat its success at next year’s Oscars? If this is as good as I expect to be, it definitely has a good shot.
