Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming to Netflix in February

A new month, more movies.  Netflix just keeps pushing them out and this is yet another impressive month.  Here are my picks for the best movies coming to Netflix in February.

5 – AMERICAN CRIME STORY: THE PEOPLE V. O.J. SIMPSON (Scott Alexander, Larry Karaszewski, 2016)

Every once in awhile, I’ll drop some T.V. on a list.  I don’t watch a lot of T.V., since I’m mostly watching movies.  American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson is one of the finest television experiences I have ever had.  Taking us deep into one of the infamous court cases of all-time, the show reveals how both sides fought the case and really focused on its key moments.  The spectacular cast, led by the electric Courtney B. Vance as Johnny Cochran and the masterful Sarah Paulson as Marcia Clarke, is one of them best T.V. ensembles I have ever seen.  This is television at its finest and needs to be seen.

4 – THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS (Henry Selick, 1993)

Christmas movie?  Halloween movie?  Who cares?!  Henry Selick’s stop-motion musical is great no matter the season.  The visuals are awe-inspiring, the story is unique and fun, and the songs are catchy and brilliantly written.  I don’t know what else to say about this movie.  If you haven’t seen it, you haven’t lived.

3 – MILK (Gus Van Sant, 2008)

Milk is one of the very best biopics I have ever seen.  It looks at Harvey Milk (Sean Penn), and his struggles as an American gay activist who fought for gay rights and became California’s first openly gay elected official.  Penn is outstanding in his Oscar winning performance as Harvey Milk and we get great supporting turns from Josh Brolin, James Franco, Emile Hirsch, and Diego Luna.  This is Gus Van Sant’s best work as a director, as he gives us a thorough and heartbreaking story with some stunning visuals.  This is a spectacular film and one of the best of the 2000’s.

2 – I DON’T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE (Macon Blair, 2017)

I Don’t Feel at Home in this World Anymore was the opening night movie of the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.  It also won the Grand Jury prize as the best movie of the festival, which was a surprising choice.  I didn’t get to see the film, about a woman (Melanie Lynskey) who’s house get’s burglarized and she then sets out to find the thieves with her annoying neighbor (Elijah Wood), but I didn’t here any buzz throughout the festival for it and was really surprised when it’s name was called as the winner.  I will definitely be checking this out to see the movie that beat out other hyped Sundance titles like Brigsby Bear, Patti Cake$, and Band Aid.

1 – FINDING DORY/SAUSAGE PARTY (Andrew Stanton, Angus MacLane/Greg Tiernan, Conrad Vernon, 2016)

2016 was the year of animation, so when I saw two of it’s very best coming to Netflix this month, I had to shout out both.  These are two very different movies, but two very good movies in their own right.  Finding Dory is a worthy sequel to one of Pixar’s best, Finding Nemo (2003), and features deep messages, incredible animation, and amazing characters, new and old.  Sausage Party is a vulgar, hilarious, hour-and-a-half long sex joke that is weirdly original and one of the funniest movies of 2016, with an ending that will have your jaw on the floor.  Make sure to check two of 2016’s finest animated movies as soon as you can.
