Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming to Netflix in August
Netflix just keeps adding better and better movies. This month’s list is a diverse, fun list that includes one of Adam Sandler’s finest and one of the best movies of the 21st century. Here’s a look at the best movies coming to Netflix in August.
5 – FINAL DESTINATION 3 (James Wong, 2006)
The Final Destination movies might be slightly stupid, but they are also some of the funnest horror movies you will ever see. The first one, which came out in 2000, was incredibly inventive and actually kind of scary. But, Final Destination 3 is probably my favorite of the series because it realized the insanity of it’s idea and ran with it the wildest way. Featuring awesome deaths involving roller coasters, nail guns, tanning beds, and fireworks, you’re always on the edge of your seat wondering how the next person is going go. And, this was my introduction to Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who is now one of my favorite actresses. If you’re looking for a wild, fun, bloody good time, this is the movie to watch.
4 – BIG DADDY (Dennis Dugan, 1999)
Without question, Adam Sandler peaked in the late 90’s. With classics like Billy Madison (1995) and Happy Gilmore (1996), Sandler was consistently coming out with hilarious comedies. Big Daddy could be argued as Sandler’s last truly great comedy. As a slacker tollbooth operator, Sunny (Sandler) adopts a kid to impress his girlfriend, but then ends up being the unlikely foster father. Playing the immature, slacker Sunny, Sandler is at his absolute best. I also believe this is Rob Schneider’s best cameo as the foreign delivery man. The movie is quotable, hilarious, weirdly sentimental, and should be remembered forever as one of the last great Sandler movies.
3 – ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO (Kevin Smith, 2008)
Zack and Miri Make a Porno is Kevin Smith’s most underrated movie. The studio did a terrible job of advertising the movie more as a typical love story rather than a Kevin Smith porn comedy. This movie combined members of the Apatow group (Seth Rogen, Elizabeth Banks, Craig Robinson) with Kevin Smith’s usual crew (Jay Mewes, Jeff Anderson, Justin Long) and made a perfect comedic ensemble. The movie is surprisingly touching, as well, even if it is about about two broke friends who decide to make a porn to raise money. But, like nearly every Kevin Smith movie, this film is smart, raunchy, and gut-bustingly hilarious. I love this movie from beginning to end and think it is one of Smith’s finest.
2 – THE VERDICT (Sidney Lumet, 1982)
Sidney Lumet is one of the greatest directors of all-time. He was a true actors director, getting the best performances out his actors every single time, leading to countless awards and accolades. The Verdict brought the great director together with a cinematic icon in Paul Newman and the result is masterful. In one of the best performances of Newman’s long, illustrious career, he plays an alcoholic lawyer trying to save his career by taking on a medical malpractice case rather than settle. The movie is court room thriller, complex character study, and emotional drama. It hooks you from the beginning and never lets up. This is a film that features two of the very best at what they did and the very peak of their talents.
1 – NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (Joel and Ethan Coen, 2007)
I absolutely love The Coen Brothers. There are times where I mentally debate them as my favorite directors of all-time. No Country for Old Men is one of their best movies, if not the best, and this is coming from a directing team that made Fargo (1995) and The Big Lebowski (1998). Adapting the novel of the same name by Cormac McCarthy, No Country for Old Men follows a simple Texas man (Josh Brolin) who stumbles on a suitcase full of cash that belongs to a ruthless hitman (a terrifyingly brilliant Javier Bardem). This is the closest thing to a horror film and action film we will ever get from The Coens. The movie is always captivating, relentlessly tense, and filmmaking at its finest, with stunning cinematography from the legendary Roger Deakins. No Country for Old Men is a true cinematic masterpiece and one of the best movies of the 21st century.
