Top 5 – Awesome Movies Coming to Netflix in April
Not the strongest month for Netflix, but still got some good flicks coming. Here are my choices for the best movies coming to Netflix in April.
You can see the full list of movies and shows coming to Netflix in April right here.
5 – DEAR WHITE PEOPLE: SEASON 1 (Justin Simien, 2017)
Dear White People was an indie gem in 2014. A biting, socially relevant, authentically hilarious look at Africa-American culture in today’s college life with a stellar performance from Tessa Thompson. Now, we get a show, that is sure to be just as biting, just as relevant, and just as funny as the movie, especially since the film’s director, Justin Simien, is behind the show. Already people have cancelled their Netflix accounts because of the show, which makes me even more excited to check this one out.
4 – KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS (Travis Knight, 2016)
I’ve gushed and gushed about this movie from the moment I saw it. Kubo and the Two Strings is one of the greatest animated movies I have ever seen. A creative, stunning, emotionally powerful film about family and destiny. The stop-motion animation is absolutely beautiful, particularly when Kubo is telling his paper stories and characters dance through the air. In a loaded year for animation, Kubo and the Two Strings was far and away the best. It was one of the best movies I saw in 2016 and one that will blow you away.
3 – SCHINDLER’S LIST (Steven Spielberg, 1993)
I mean, what else can be said about Schindler’s List? It is one of the greatest achievements in cinematic history. Steven Spielberg’s epic, haunting look at the Holocaust is something to behold. Shot in beautiful black and white, this tells the true story of Oscar Schindler (a career-best Liam Neeson) as he tries to save as many Jews as possible after witnessing the horrors of the Holocaust. This is a landmark piece of cinema and even though it isn’t the easiest movie to watch, it is essential viewing for every human.
2 – TROPIC THUNDER (Ben Stiller, 2008)
Far and away the best movie Ben Stiller has directed and arguably the best he’s ever acted in, Tropic Thunder is one of the best comedies of the 2000’s. This perfect satire on Hollywood and ego, the film takes us into production of an over-budget war film starring some of the most arrogant actors in Hollywood, played by Stiller, Jack Black, and Oscar nominee Robert Downey Jr, who gives an uproarious, smart, brilliant performance. I can watch this movie over and over and now that it’s on Netflix, I probably will.
1 – THE PRESTIGE (Christopher Nolan, 2006)
Tropic Thunder almost cracked the number one spot, but it’s really tough to beat this Christopher Nolan masterpiece. The Prestige ranks as my fourth favorite Christopher Nolan movie, following The Dark Knight (2008), Inception (2010), and Memento (2001), but I feel this is Nolan’s most underrated achievement. This is a compelling and tricky look at two rival stage magicians (Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale, both stellar) and their on-going feud with trying to one-up each other. This is a movie about gamesmanship, obsession, and a look at how far people will go to be the best. Like most Nolan movies, you are glued from the get-go, as Nolan peels back layer after layer until you get to the mind-blowing ending. This is a truly special film and the best movie coming to Netflix in April.
