Most Anticipated Movies of 2018: 10-1

Continuing my list of my most anticipated movies of 2018, these ten right here have me really excited.  It’s a nice combination of directors, franchises, and actors that I love and a lot of Oscar contenders.  Here are my ten most anticipated movies of 2018.

 

 

 

 

 

10 – THE BEACH BUM (Harmony Korine, TBA)

Harmony Korine made one of my favorite movies this decade with Spring Breakers.  He is a wild director who’s film’s have kinetic energy and are sometimes controversial.  The Beach Bum stars Matthew McConaughey as a stoner named Moondog who lives by his own rules.  I’m sure there’s more to the story, but that tagline and that picture of McConaughey is enough to have interested.

 

 

9 – WHERE’D YOU GO, BERNADETTE? (Richard Linklater, October 19)

Richard Linklater is one of our finest filmmakers today.  He consistently brings interesting, realistic stories to the big screen and gets great performances from all of his actors.  Where’d You Go, Bernadette? follows a young girl who discovers her mother’s dark past after she disappears.  The great Cate Blanchett stars as the mother, Bernadette, and it could be a performance, and a movie, that could get Oscar attention later in the year.

 

 

8 – IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK (Barry Jenkins, TBA)

I wasn’t as over-the-moon with Moonlight as everyone else was, but I did think Barry Jenkins’ direction was perfect.  Only being his second film, Moonlight established a new, powerful voice in the cinematic world.  If Beale Street Could Talk puts Jenkins back in the director’s chair in a film that will be just as powerful and important as Moonlight.

 

 

7 – BACKSEAT (Adam McKay, December 21)

Christian Bale is Dick Cheney, Amy Adams is Lynne Cheney, Sam Rockwell is George W. Bush.  Oscar.  OSCAR.  OSCAR!!!!  Adam McKay pulls out all the stops to tell the story of Dick Cheney and his reign as Vice President.  McKay, known most for his comedies, became legitimate filmmaker in 2015 with The Big Short and looks to repeat that success in what is arguably the biggest Oscar-bait movie of 2017.  Let’s hope the bait lands.

 

 

6 – CREED 2 (Steven Caple Jr., November 21)

Creed was my number one movie of 2015.  It is an incredible film that revitalized a dead franchise, gave Sylvester Stallone the performance of a lifetime, and put Michael B. Jordan and director Ryan Coogler on the map.  Creed 2 will put Adonis (Jordan) up against the son of the infamous Ivan Drago, Vitor (Florian Munteanu).  Coogler isn’t back behind the camera, which is worrisome, especially since his replacement is somebody completely new and kind of random.  But hey, Coogler was a relative unknown when he made Creed, so maybe Caple Jr. will have the same success.

 

5 – INCREDIBLES II (Brad Bird, June 15)

The Incredibles is one of Pixar’s best movies and one of the best superhero movies ever as well.  It’s been 14 years since the original, but Pixar has a knack for putting out great, long-awaited sequels (see Toy Story 3 and Finding Dory).  I can’t wait to see what Brad Bird and Pixar have in store for this much-wanted sequel.

 

 

4 – FIRST MAN (Damien Chazelle, October 12)

Damien Chazelle became the youngest Best Director Oscar winner in 2016 for La La Land, a film that looks like it was made by a seasoned pro, not a 31-year-old who’s only made three films.  How does he follow that up?  With a biopic of Neil Armstrong starring Ryan Gosling.  It’s going to be interesting to see how Chazelle does with his first movie not within the music genre.  He has a lot to prove to show people his Oscar win wasn’t a fluke.  I have faith Chazelle will blow all of us away once again.

 

 

3 – ISLE OF DOGS (Wes Anderson, March 23)

Wes Anderson has a nearly perfect filmography in my mind and has really only gotten better as his career has gone on.  Isle of Dogs brings Anderson back to the stop-motion world, as a bunch of dogs try to save a boy who has landed on their island.  The visuals looks absolutely stunning and, in typical Anderson form, he get a who’s-who of voice talent.  I think Anderson has another hit on his hands.

 

 

2 – AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR (The Russo Brothers, May 4)

This is the biggest movie of 2018.  No movie has more riding on it that Avengers: Infinity War.  This is a movie that is ten years in the making and we now get our epic conclusion.  Every Marvel hero that we have seen is in this movie all going up against Thanos (Josh Brolin, in the running for Best 2018 only two months in).  The Russo Brothers know the material, they know the heroes, and they know the scale and they will not disappoint.  There is literally only filmmaker who could knock Infinity War from the number one spot and if you know anything about me or the website you might have an idea of who it is.

 

 

1 – THE IRISHMAN (Martin Scorsese, TBA)

Martin Scorsese could make a movie about a man painting a fence and it would be number one.  He is my favorite filmmaker eve and, in my opinion, the greatest filmmaker to ever live and, at 75, is putting out some of his best work.  Netflix won a massive bidding war to release The Irishman and it is easily the streaming services biggest release, as they gave Scorsese a $125 million budget for this film.  The story is about the murder of Jimmy Hoffa, but it’s the cast that really sells this movie.  It’s icon after icon in this one, with Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino (first time working with Scorsese), Joe Pesci (out of retirement), and Harvey Keitel paired with great actors like Jesse Plemmons, Anna Paquin, Bobby Canavale, and Jack Huston.  There is no release date yet, and a push to 2019 is a possibility, but this could come out by the end of the year, which places it firmly on this list.  A Scorsese gangster film with this cast?  How can it not be my most anticipated movie of 2018?
