Continuing my look at the best movies of the 2010s, I will now be looking at the best of the technical aspects of film, which includes aspects like score, editing, and screenplay.  I also included Best Director in this section.  For each technical category I did a top five ranking.  Doing only five for a decade was extremely tough, but doing five shows the elite of the elite of the decade.  Here are my picks for the best technical achievements of 2010.

 

 

 

 

BEST DIRECTOR

  1. David Fincher, THE SOCIAL NETWORK

  3. George Miller, MAD MAX: FURY ROAD
  4. Jordan Peele, GET OUT
  5. Martin Scorsese, THE WOLF OF WALL STREET
  • Get ready to see a lot of these movies in the coming posts.  The Social Network is a movie movie that hits right on cylinders.  Fincher uses technical mastery and top-tier acting to bring Aaron Sorkin’s screenplay to life.

 

 

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

  1. GET OUT
  2. INCEPTION
  3. INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS
  4. SPOTLIGHT
  5. KNIVES OUT
  • These five movies are all unique and masterfully written, but Jordan Peele’s debut is a darkly hilarious and horrific look at black culture in white America.

 

 

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

  1. THE SOCIAL NETWORK
  2. MONEYBALL
  3. WHIPLASH
  4. BLACKKKLANSMAN
  5. LINCOLN
  • Sorkin’s rapid dialog and intercutting storylines makes The Social Network one of the great screenplays of modern cinema.

 

 

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

  1. BLADE RUNNER 2049
  2. MAD MAX: FURY ROAD
  3. THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL
  4. DUNKIRK
  5. GRAVITY
  • We got some gorgeous movies this decade, but Deakins’ work on Blade Runner 2049 offered new challenges in terms of lighting and color pallet for the legendary DP and solidified his status as one of the greats to ever operate a camera.

 

 

BEST EDITING

  • Just watch the Henley Royal Regatta scene, an encapsulation of perfect editing without a single word being said.

  4. MAD MAX: FURY ROAD
  5. JACKIE
  • The Great Gatsby‘s gorgeous costumes brought us to the era and lifestyle of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel.

 

 

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN

  1. THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL
  2. BLACK PANTHER
  3. INCEPTION
  4. ONCE UPON A TIME… IN HOLLYWOOD 
  5. CRIMSON PEAK
  • The stunning hotel that made me wish it were real.

 

 

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

  1. INCEPTION
  2. AQUAMAN
  3. DOCTOR STRANGE
  4. DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES
  5. AD ASTRA
  • Floating people, blown up fruit stands pausing in mid-air, and flipping entire city blocks are just the tip of the iceberg in Nolan’s sci-fi crime film.

 

 

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE

  • I listen to all of these on a regular basis, but Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ haunting, somber score is a key element to a film about greed, friendship, and the rise of an business icon.

 

 

BEST ORIGINAL SONG
