Best of 2017 – Best of the Techs
Continuing to look at the best movies of 2017, I am going to look at the best of the techs. What I mean by techs is the more technical categories, like screenplays, costumes, editing, cinematography, etc. So here we go
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY – THE SHAPE OF WATER
Runner Up – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
- Guillermo Del Toro mixing fairy tales, science fiction, heist films, and love stories was unmatched by anyone in 2017.
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY – MOLLY’S GAME
Runner Up – The Disaster Artist
- The Disaster Artist is a nearly spot-on adaptation of the book. But Sorkin’s screenplay is quick, smart, and brilliant in every way.
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY – BLADE RUNNER 2049
Runner Up – Dunkirk
- The scale of Dunkirk is impressive, but Blade Runner 2049 is some of Roger Deakins’ best work ever, and that is saying A LOT.
BEST EDITING – DUNKIRK
Runner Up – Baby Driver
- With three stories at three different time all leading into one moment, Dunkirk is never confusing, always riveting, and masterfully crafted.
BEST COSTUME DESIGN – BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
Runner Up – The Greatest Showman
- Seeing Belle in her infamous yellow dress in a non-animated form is stunning.
BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN – BLADE RUNNER 2049
Runner Up – Dunkirk
- Both are huge in scale, but Blade Runner takes us to new worlds and they are all jaw-dropping.
BEST SCORE – DUNKIRK
Runner Up – Star Wars – Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
- Dunkirk‘s score as a life of it’s own, as it adds tension and mood to this chilling war film.
BEST ORIGINAL SONG – “REMEMBER ME” from COCO
Runner Up – “The Other Side” from The Greatest Showman
- “The Other Side” is a true standout in a film filled with great song-and-dance numbers. But “Remember Me” is the emotional highpoint of a movie about life and death and crushes your heart with its simplicity and heart.
BEST MAKE-UP – I, TONYA
Runner Up – Darkest Hour
- Any movie that can make Margot Robbie and Sebastian Stan un-attractive has pulled off something special.
