Best of 2017 – Best of the Genres
Continuing to look at the best and worst movies of 2017, here are my picks for the best movies from each genre.
BEST ANIMATED FILM – COCO
Runner Up – Mutafukaz
- In a relatively weak year for animation, Pixar reigns supreme with it’s heart-tugging, musical gem.
BEST FOREIGN FILM – THE MERCILESS
Runner Up – The Square
- The Merciless is a slick, fun, twisty, Departed-esque gangster flick that is wildly entertaining and captivating.
BEST COMEDY – THE BIG SICK
Runner Up – The Hitman’s Bodyguard
- The Big Sick has everything. It’s funny, it’s sweet, it will pull at the heartstrings, and features some sensational writing and acting.
BEST ACTION MOVIE – BABY DRIVER
Runner Up – John Wick 2
- Tough call between these two, but Baby Driver’s car chases, music, and editing got the blood pumping and toes tapping.
BEST HORROR MOVIE – IT
Runner Up – Annabelle: Creation
- Both were far better than what I expected, but It is a truly special film that combines horror with coming age seamlessly.
BIGGEST SURPRISE – SPLIT
Runner Up – Megan Leavey
- Did anybody see M. Night Shyamalan ever getting back to Sixth Sense-level? Well he did, as Split is a tension fueled psychological thriller.
BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT – ALL EYEZ ON ME
Runner Up – Suburbicon
- Suburbicon disappointed because of the talent around it. All Eyez On Me is an insult to a hip-hop and cultural icon.
BEST MOVIE NOBODY SAW – DETROIT
Runner Up – Last Flag Flying
- I don’t even know what happened to Last Flag Flying. It barely got a release and that’s a shame. But Kathryn Bigelow’s pulse-pounding, topical Detroit is one of the best movies of 2017, yet failed miserably at the box office.
WORST MOVIE EVERYONE SAW – FIFTY SHADES DARKER
Runner Up – A Bad Mom’s Christmas
- Both are terrible sequels, but Fifty Shades is just a travesty.
UNDERRATED – ALIEN: COVENANT
Runner Up – Snatched
- Snatched made me laugh and sure, Alien: Covenant has it’s flaws, but I enjoyed it for it’s horror movie stupidness and it’s technical mastery.
OVERRATED – LOGAN
Runner Up – Lady Bird
- Lady Bird being an Oscar frontrunner is really grinding my gears. Logan being considered one of the greatest comic book movies of all-time, now that is just absurd.
BEST MOVIE WE FORGOT ABOUT – SPLIT
Runner Up – Logan Lucky
- Logan Lucky showed how great Steven Soderbergh is at comedy and ensemble pieces. Split, for being how good it is, came out early in the year, made really good money, and then just kind of vanished. Tragic.
BEST MOVIE YOU NEVER HEARD OF – THE SCYTHIAN LAMB
Runner Up – Dayveon
- Dayveon is an intimate look at gangster life in the projects of Little Rock, Arkansas. The Scythian Lamb is a tale about the humanity and people changing after incarceration. Both are great and should be sought after if possible.
BIGGEST W.T.F MOVIE – mother!
Runner Up – The Book of Henry
- I still have no idea what The Book of Henry was about, as the tonal shifts and multiple plots get wildly confusing. But, mother! shook me, confused me, and horrified me at the end and I still have no idea what it is truly about (Aronofsky says it’s about Earth and global warming, I call bullshit).
