Best Movies of 2016 – Best Scenes of 2016
As we continue to look at the best movies of 2016, I am going to countdown my favorite scenes of 2016. This list was almost impossible to make, as there were a number of scenes I could have picked from the 160 plus movies I saw last year. But, when thinking about, these were the scenes that truly blew me away in 2016. So here we go, my ten favorite scenes of 2016.
Also, SPOILERS AHEAD, for those who have no seen all of these movies.
10 – WONDER WOMAN SAVES THE DAY – Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice
I am not the biggest fan of Batman v. Superman. The movie is a disaster. But, one thing that I absolutely did love was Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. Before she showed up, I had given up all hope when it came to Batman v. Superman, especially after the horrific “Martha” scene. But then, as our titular characters begin fighting Doomsday with little luck, our Amazonian princess comes through and saves them both. From the screeching guitar in her score to her badass lines like “I’ve killed things from other worlds before.” to her kicking ass and taking names, Gadot single handedly saved Batman v. Superman from complete disaster. I loved Wonder Woman and this small scene made me excited for her solo movie
9 – “WELL I’M STANDING WITH YOU!” – Fences
The emotional peak of Denzel Washington’s family drama shows Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington) confessing to his wife, Rose (Viola Davis), that he has had an affair and gotten another woman pregnant. Davis is masterful in this scene, giving a powerful, gut-wrenching monolog that is the film’s true highlight of this perfect adaptation.
8 – OPENING BATTLE AT HACKSAW RIDGE – Hacksaw Ridge
The first hour of Mel Gibson’s war epic is an easy, character focused film. Gibson then does a complete 180 and literally blasts us in the face with horrific war violence. This battle can be compared to the Normandy opener in Saving Private Ryan (1998). It is a bloody, gory, graphic, thrilling scene and one that only a true master like Gibson could have made.
7 – OPENING CREDITS – Deadpool
The best opening credit sequence of 2016 is the one that set the movie up perfectly. After the Deadpool character was ruined several years ago, Ryan Reynolds and director Tim Miller made sure we knew from the get-go that they did it right. Set to the sweet sounds of Juice Newton’s “Angel of the Morning”, with still images of violence and cast and crew names like “Some Douchebag’s Movie” and “Starring God’s Perfect Idiot”, we knew we were getting a bloody, meta, hilarious movie, which is everything Deadpool should be.
6 – “SING TO HIM A NEW SONG” – The Birth of a Nation
Nate Parker’s debut film is truly sensational with a lot of moments of brutality and beauty. But one scene has stuck with since I first saw this film back in January. Nat Turner (Parker) and his owner, Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer), visit another plantation, where Nat and Samuel are exposed to horrors neither had seen before, even in this horrible time. Turner then must preach to the fellow slaves, but this time, his sermon is different. Instead of a safe one, it is a deep, inspirational one about change. It is the turning point in the film and a scene that will shake you.
5 – THE LANDING ON THE HUDSON – Sully
This scene is a technical achievement on every level. We knew the plane was going to land, but that didn’t stop this scene from making our hearts race and palms sweat. Perfectly shot, edited, and acted, Clint Eastwood put together a pulse-pounding, expertly crafted scene that ends with one of the best and most chilling shots of 2016.
4 – ‘A LOVELY NIGHT’ – La La Land
I could have picked a number of scenes from this brilliant musical. From the eye-popping opening, to the heart breaking conclusion. But I was completely floored by this number. A beautifully choreographed tap dance number that starts the relationship between Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling). Stone and Gosling’s on-screen chemistry lights up the screen and their dancing is top notch. This is the scene where I fell in love and never looked back.
3 – FOOD ORGY – Sausage Party
In the funniest comedy of 2016, we got one of the most insane, ridiculous, tear-inducing scenes I have ever seen on film. The climax to this 90 minute sex joke is an all out food orgy, featuring every food you can think of doing every sexual position you could imagine. For the final three minutes of the movie, I was in a constant state of hilarity, as I was wondering what they could possibly pull off next and they never disappointed. Only Seth Rogen’s fucked up genius could pull this off so brilliantly.
2 – AIRPORT FIGHT – Captain America: Civil War
If I was to pick a scene I was most excited about seeing in 2016, it was this one. Knowing that we were finally going to see Team Iron Man vs Team Captain America is something that would give every comic book fan a quarter chub. The battle did not disappoint. This is one of the greatest scenes in any comic book movie. An action-packed, exciting, fun battle between our beloved heroes. And, it was the first time we got to see our new Spider-Man in action and he did not disappoint. This had the number one spot since April, until a couple weeks ago.
1 – THE DARTH VADER CLIMAX – Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
This is a scene nobody saw coming. After the Rebels got the plans to the Death Star, you would think the movie would be over, right? Wrong. Director Gareth Edwards transitions us into the beginning of Episode IV: A New Hope, where we see Darth Vader at his absolute best. When we see the red lightsaber light up, we know we are in for a treat. Vader busts through the hallway of guards, using the Force and his saber to dismantle every single guard in sight. It is a rousing, eye-popping scene that sends chills down your spine. Never have we seen the Vader like this. It was the perfect ending to Rogue One and the best scene of 2016.
