Best Movies from the Suicide Squad Cast

This weekend, the highly anticipated comic book film Suicide Squad comes out.  Though I have my reservations about the film, one of the things that makes me the most excited is the cast.  It’s a perfect mix of big name Hollywood talent, stars on the rise, and relative unknowns.  So before you see the movie, check out my favorite movies from the Suicide Squad cast.

I am going to focus on the main cast members and the director and discuss what their best movie is.  Their best movie will be based on performance and film quality.

 

JARED LETO (The Joker)

BEST MOVIE: REQUIEM FOR A DREAM (2000)

Most people would put Leto’s Oscar winning performance in Dallas Buyers Club (2013) in this spot.  Now, while I do like his performance in that film, his performance in Darren Aronofsky’s drug-horror movie Requiem for a Dream was my intro to Leto and one I will never forget.  He’s fully committed and makes a usually despicable character sympathetic.  This movie is a tough watch, but Leto makes it worth it.

 

 

MARGOT ROBBIE (Harley Quinn)

BEST MOVIE: THE WOLF OF WALL STREET (2013)

This choice wasn’t as easy as it may have seemed, as I was close to picking her strong, physical performance in the indie Z for Zachariah (2015).  But Robbie’s American film debut in Martin Scorsese’s drug fueled masterpiece was lightning in a bottle.  It is a fierce, sexy, tough performance and one of the best leading ladies Scorsese has ever had.

 

 

WILL SMITH (Deadshot)

BEST MOVIE: I AM LEGEND (2007)

When it comes to Will Smith, a number of movies could be considered his best.  So I went with the one that has one of his best performances and is one of his overall best movies.  The movie that has both of these traits is I Am Legend.  Smith acting on screen nearly by himself for over 80% of the movie is something that takes true acting talent and charisma.  The film itself is also great and one of the best post-apocalyptic horror thrillers I’ve ever seen.  A number of films could have been his best, but this is the perfect combination of a great performance in a great movie.

 

 

VIOLA DAVIS (Amanda Waller)

BEST MOVIE: THE HELP (2011)

This was a tough call, as it was a toss up between her powerhouse, single scene in Doubt (2007) or The Help.  I went with The Help, as it was a powerful, moving, masterful performance filled with pride, grit, joy.  Davis was robbed of an Oscar for this role, but it’s one of the finest this decade.

 

 

JAI COURTNEY (Boomerang)

BEST MOVIE: INSURGENT (2015)

I hate Jai Courtney.  He ruins everything.  Insurgent was the only movie he starred in where I didn’t despise him.  And on an even better note, (SPOILER), he dies, which meant he was done with the series and I wouldn’t have to see his face ever again.

 

 

JOEL KINNAMAN (Rick Flag)

BEST MOVIE: HOUSE OF CARDS: SEASON 4 (2016)

Not a movie, but who cares.  Kinnaman was superb in this last season of House of Cards, playing the Republican nominee going up against President Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey).  Going toe-to-toe with Spacey is hard enough, but making me root against Underwood was something I never thought possible, and that’s all because of Kinnaman’s performance.

 

 

JAY HERNANDEZ (Diablo)

BEST MOVIE: FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS (2004)

As one of the senior captains on a highly touted high school football team, Hernandez epitomizes the pressure of high school athletics, in Peter Berg’s emotional and riveting sports drama.

 

 

ADAM BEACH (Slipknot)

BEST MOVIE: FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS (2006)

I wasn’t a big fan of Flags of Our Fathers when it came out (I actually like it’s sister piece, Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) a lot more).  But, Adam Beach was incredible in Flags.  He plays a Native American solider who cannot handle the pressure and racism he faces after raising the infamous flag at Iwo Jima.  It’s a heartbreaking performance and one that deserved a lot more love than it got.

 

 

CARA DELEVIGNE (Enchantress)

BEST MOVIE: PAPER TOWNS (2015)

I’ve only seen Delevigne in Paper Towns and the movie is less than mediocre and her performance is good until the very end.  The last third of the film is so infuriating, it ruined everything about the movie for me.  So, yeah.

 

 

ADEWALE AKINNUOYE-AGBAJE (Killer Croc)

BEST MOVIE: GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN’ (2005)

Another actor who’s career I haven’t followed closely.  The only role I really remember him in is the 50 Cent vehicle Get Rich or Die Tryin’.  I do remember liking him in the movie though, playing 50’s drug dealing boss.  He played it like an old school gangster you’d see in the 70’s.  Maybe I’ll give his filmography a look.

 

KAREN FUKUHARA (Katana)

BEST MOVIE: N/A

Miss Fukuhara will be making her cinematic debut as Katana.  Pretty exciting to see a brand new talent in this film.

 

 

DAVID AYER (Director)

BEST MOVIE: FURY (2014)

This was a close battle between Fury and End of Watch (2012).  But, after re-watching both movies, Fury holds up better and is still as thrilling as it was the first time I saw it.  This film takes us deep into the world of tank warfare in WWII.  It’s an adrenaline pumping, violent film that will never stops.  It has great performances all across the board and is Ayer’s best film as a director.  Check this out if you haven’t seen it.  It’s high-art action at it’s finest.
