Best Movies of 2016 – Best of the Genres
Continuing to look at the best and worst movies of 2016, I am not going to look at the best of the genres. I am going to break down my favorite movies per genre with a brief description as to why I chose that specific film.
BEST FOREIGN FILM – ELLE
RUNNER UP – PARADISE
- Paradise was one of the most harrowing movies I saw in 2016, but Paul Verhoeven’s sexualized thriller is a throwback to Hitchcock and one of the ten best movies of the year.
BEST ANIMATED FILM – KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS
RUNNER UP – ZOOTOPIA
- 2016 was the year for animation and Kubo and the Two Strings is one of the best animated movies I have ever seen in my life.
BEST COMIC BOOK FILM – CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR
RUNNER UP – DEADPOOL
- Deadpool came out of nowhere and would probably be number one most years if it weren’t for the biggest, baddest, most fun comic book movie in years.
BEST COMEDY – THE NICE GUYS
RUNNER UP – SAUSAGE PARTY
- Nothing is funnier than seeing a hot dog have an orgy with a bagel and a taco. But, Shane Black’s whip-smart detective comedy has fast dialog and perfect performances.
BEST ACTION MOVIE – ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY
RUNNER UP – TMNT: OUT OF THE SHADOWS
- Rogue One is a no-hold-barred war film in space. TMNT is just pure, chaotic fun.
BEST HORROR MOVIE – THE CONJURING 2
RUNNER UP – UNDER THE SHADOW
- The Conjuring 2 is a horror masterpiece and the closest thing I’ve seen to The Exorcist (1973). Under the Shadow creeped me out with it’s slow burning pace and chilling atmosphere.
BIGGEST SURPRISE – HELL OR HIGH WATER
RUNNER UP – PETE’S DRAGON
- Pete’s Dragon was pure delight that slapped a smile on my face the whole run time. But Hell or High Water came in out of nowhere to become one of the best Westerns of the 21st century.
BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT – BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: RISE OF JUSTICE
RUNNER UP – RAW
- I expected more gore in Raw, so I guess it’s my own sick fault to want more cannibalism. Batman v. Superman should have been an epic clash of titans and it ended up being a disaster.
BEST MOVIE NOBODY SAW – MISS SLOANE
RUNNER UP – BLEED FOR THIS
- I loved Bleed for This and it’s performances. Miss Sloane, however, features one of the year’s best characters and will knock your socks off.
WORST MOVIE EVERYONE SAW – SUICIDE SQUAD
RUNNER UP – THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS
- Suicide Squad is just an awful movie, yet made an obscene amount of money. The Secret Life of Pets is the fourth highest domestic grossing movie of the year, which is mind-boggling.
MOVIE I LOVED THAT EVERYONE HATED – YOGA HOSERS
RUNNER UP – ALLEGIANT
- I’m a big fan of the Divergent series and don’t understand the hate surrounding it. I am a bigger fan of Kevin Smith and the second part of True North Trilogy is a rowdy, hilarious middle finger to critics and haters everywhere.
MOVIE I HATED THAT EVERYONE LOVED – LIGHTS OUT
RUNNER UP – CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE
- Both made money, and both are sitting with good critic and fan scores. Both I did not like. Lights Out is not scary at all and Central Intelligence was not funny and made me hate The Rock, which I didn’t think was possible.
BEST MOVIE WE FORGOT ABOUT – 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE
RUNNER UP – EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!
- Both of these movies came out in March and both are spectacular. 10 Cloverfield Lane is a tense, intelligent thriller, and Everybody Wants Some! is an ode to life and finding yourself.
BEST MOVIE YOU NEVER HEARD OF – WOMEN WHO KILL
RUNNER UP – TOUCHED WITH FIRE
- Women Who Kill is a movie that has stayed with me since I saw it in October. Seek it out in the next couple months. Touched With Fire is an authentic look at bipolar disorder and features the best performance of Katie Holmes’ career.
BEST W.T.F. MOVIE – SWISS ARMY MAN
RUNNER UP – THE GREASY STRANGLER
- This was a coin flip, as both as incredibly bizarre. The Greasy Strangler is a spectacular midnight gem that’s oddly quotable and hilarious. But nothing beats Swiss Army Man’s opening credits where Paul Dano rides a dead Daniel Radcliffe like a dolphin while his rocket-like farts power them forward.
