2018 Golden Globes Predictions
The Golden Globes are a very weird awards show. It can be argued that they focus and reward more on stars and on names than the actual movies and performances nominated. They do give us a slight idea of where the Oscars may lean, which is going to be huge this year, as the Oscar race is wide open in all categories. So with that, here are my predictions for the 2018 Golden Globes. I am only predicting the movie categories, as I do not watch enough television to warrant an opinion there.
BEST SONG
“Home”- Ferdinand
“Mighty River”-Mudbound
“Remember Me”-Coco
“The Star”-The Star
“This Is Me”-The Greatest Showman
- One of the tougher categories to pick. The Greatest Showman was nominated all over the place, Coco‘s “Remember Me” is a heartbreaker, and “Mighty River” would bring Mary J. Blige to the stage. This is doozy.
WILL WIN – “Mighty River” – Mudbound
SHOULD WIN – “Remember Me” – Coco
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
Carter Burwell – Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri
Alexandre Desplat – The Shape of Water
Jonny Greenwood – Phantom Thread
John Williams – The Post
Hans Zimmer – Dunkirk
- This is The Shape of Water‘s to lose, but don’t be surprised if Dunkirk or Phantom Thread to pull an upset.
WILL WIN – The Shape of Water
SHOULD WIN – Dunkirk
BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
A Fantastic Woman (Chile)
First They Killed My Father (Cambodia)
In the Fade (Germany/France)
Loveless (Russia)
The Square (Sweden, Germany, France)
- I’ve only seen one of these (The Square), but First They Killed My Father is directed by Angelina Jolie, and the Hollywood Foreign Press will use this opportunity to get a star on stage.
WILL WIN – First They Killed My Father
SHOULD WIN – The Square
BEST ANIMATED FILM
The Boss Baby
The Breadwinner
Coco
Ferdinand
Loving Vincent
- Never bet against Pixar.
WILL WIN – Coco
SHOULD WIN – Coco
BEST SCREENPLAY
Guillermo Del Toro and Vanessa Taylor – The Shape of Water
Greta Gerwig – Lady Bird
Liz Hannah and Josh Singer – The Post
Martin McDonagh – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Aaron Sorkin – Molly’s Game
- This is a doozy. I’m a big fan of four of these nominees and any of the five could win. It could be a battle between Lady Bird and Three Billboards, but you can never count out Aaron Sorkin.
WILL WIN – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
SHOULD WIN – Molly’s Game
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Mary J. Blige – Mudbound
Hong Chau – Downsizing
Alison Janney – I, Tonya
Laurie Metcalf – Lady Bird
Octavia Spencer – The Shape of Water
- Much like the Oscar race, it’s between Janney and Metcalf. Whomever wins here will take the lead in the Oscar race.
WILL WIN – Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird
SHOULD WIN – Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Willem DaFoe, The Florida Project
Armie Hammer, Call Me by Your Name
Richard Jenkins, The Shape of Water
Christopher Plummer, All The Money in the World
Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
- This is always a tough category to pick. Will the two frontrunners, DaFoe and Rockwell, separate themselves from the pack? Or will the 11th hour nomination of Christopher Plummer make some noise?
WILL WIN – Christopher Plummer, All the Money in the World
SHOULD WIN – Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
BEST ACTRESS – MUSICAL/COMEDY
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy
Judi Dench, Victoria & Abdul
Margot Robbie, I, Tonya
Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird
Emma Stone, Battle of the Sexes
Helen Mirren, The Leisure Seeker
- It’s a two horse race between Ronan and Robbie. Ronan as been nominated before and looks to garner a win this year.
WILL WIN – Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird
SHOULD WIN – Margot Robbie, I, Tonya
BEST ACTOR – MUSICAL/COMEDY
Steve Carrell, Battle of the Sexes
Ansel Elgort, Baby Driver
James Franco, The Disaster Artist
Hugh Jackman, The Greatest Showman
Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out
- Jackman is a star and could pull a W here in a lesser film. But I believe this is going to Franco and he should either bring Tommy Wiseau up on stage or do the whole speech as Wiseau.
WILL WIN – James Franco, The Disaster Artist
SHOULD WIN – James Franco, The Disaster Artist
BEST ACTRESS – DRAMA
Jessica Chastain, Molly’s Game
Sally Hawkins, The Shape of Water
Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Meryl Streep, The Post
Michelle Williams, All the Money in the World
- I would love to see Chastain get a W here, but it’s between Hawkins, McDormand, and Streep. Hawkins and McDormand are in beloved films, but I’m going with McDormand for her towering performance.
WILL WIN – Francis McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
SHOULD WIN – Jessica Chastain, Molly’s Game
BEST ACTOR – DRAMA
Timothée Chalamet, Call Me by Your Name
Daniel Day Lewis, Phantom Thread
Tom Hanks, The Post
Gary Oldman, The Darkest Hour
Denzel Washington, Roman J. Israel, Esq.
- Much like the Oscars, it’s a battle between Chalamet and Oldman. The HFPA loves rising stars and Oldman has been rather critical of them in recent years. Daniel Day-Lewis, in his final role, could get some sympathy votes, so watch for an upset.
WILL WIN – Timothée Chalamet, Call Me by Your Name
SHOULD WIN – Timothée Chalamet, Call Me by Your Name
BEST DIRECTOR
Guillermo Del Toro, The Shape of Water
Martin McDonagh, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk
Ridley Scott, All the Money in the World
Steven Spielberg, The Post
- It’s Del Toro vs Nolan in an epic battle of directing mastery. Both films are directed to perfection and both are loved by the HFPA. I’m cool with either taking it.
WILL WIN – Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk
SHOULD WIN – Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk
BEST PICTURE – MUSICAL/COMEDY
The Disaster Artist
Get Out
The Greatest Showman
I, Tonya
Lady Bird
- The fact that Get Out is in this category is wrong, but it could definitely win. It’s biggest competition is Lady Bird, as it received more nominations and is a true comedy. Two Oscar favorites are going head-to-head, it’s anyone’s game.
WILL WIN – Lady Bird
SHOULD WIN – The Disaster Artist
BEST PICTURE – DRAMA
Call Me by Your Name
Dunkirk
The Post
The Shape of Water
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
- The biggest category of the night. Rarely is there a split between Picture and Director, but I’m calling one this year. Dunkirk could easily win, as could Three Billboards. But I’m going with the most nominated film of the night and Guillermo Del Toro.
WILL WIN – The Shape of Water
SHOULD WIN – Dunkirk
